This spell is a special award directly from a Lawful Good Deity, His or Her Avatar, or Attribute, to a favoured Cleric or Paladin. Usually as reward for especially brave, loyal, or dilligent service. It cannot be chosen, requested or otherwise gained by any arcane or divine spellcaster except by award. Originally awarded by Heironeous to Xero the Averil Cleric for service in the ongoing fight against Evil Clerics of Hextor in Bonnavalla.
This spell is used instead of a melee attack. The caster must already be in melee combat with the attacker that is the prime subject of the attack. The caster states that they are going to attempt Celestial Fury instead of a standard attack. A failed melee attack roll wastes the spell.
On a successful melee attack roll, in addition to the damage caused by the attack, negative energy spreads out in all directions from the point of origin, dealing 1d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +25) to nearby living evil aligned enemies. With the exception noted below, no single enemy takes more than one portion of spell damage. The caster must state before any roll whether the target of his melee attack (The spell focus) will take spell damage or just the melee weapon damage. (Either choice is allowed but note that if the target takes no spell damage then nor will any undead under control of the spell focus.)
Unlike inflict spells, celectial Fury does not cure undead in its area, instead it deals identical damage to any and all undead under the control of the target of the initiating melee attack. Undead damage does not count in the number of creatures affected by the spell, providing they are under the control of the spell focus at the time the spell is cast and the spell focus takes spell damage.
